Putney BKL March 2–Last Practice!

Dear “Skiers”, Yes, it is true: Our last official BKL “ski” practice of the season is this Wednesday, March 2–Can you believe it!!! After braving the viscous deluge and the arm of the law last week (that was a bad-ass, outlaw practice!), we have decided to play it SAFE this Wed and HIKE in the rain on Putney Mountain!! The Plan, if you chose to surrender yourself: 3:35 pm –Meet at the Putney Mountain Rd. trailhead parking lot (see map to trail head below). Please carpool if possible, and good luck getting up Putney Mt. Road, through the mud–seriously, high clearance cars and fearless drivers might help. Dress for 40 degree “lite” deluge and some wind (15-20 mph). NO SKIING ALOUD…Just hiking…but you can bring poles (and historic pictures of Vermont winters) if you are still in denial! Leave parking lot by 3:45 pm. Our route(s) to the summit will depend on who shows up for the treatment…I mean practice. Easiest route will be 1/2-mile gradual trail to the top with some Irish breakfast tea and cookies waiting, and helicopter return to the spa. Most challenging route (no trail, no way!) will include a steep reckless decent off the west face, maybe 400 ft vertical down, followed by clawing and gritting through mud and ice up the relentless near vertical grade to the summit. You choose. Tea and cookies on the summit at 4:45pm, down to the cars around 5:15 and back to Putney by 5:30 pm, baring tow truck intervention(s), and trips to the ER. If a few grown -ups could bring tea, that would help me prepare. I am looking forward to this, and I am not even joking! …but I will understand if your have simply had enough of this kind of “skiing”. 🙂 Yours truly, Hans, 802 380 2109

BKL Wed, Feb 24– practice is on, drive safe!

We have a pity “snow” day in Windham southeast. We will still have practice as planned, but please only come if driving is safe and you are looking to get out of the house for something fun to do! I think the driving should be fine on the main roads…don;t know about back roads. chow! h On Mon, Feb 22, 2016 at 9:10 PM, Hans Estrin <hansestrin@gmail.com> wrote: > Dear Skiers, > > While most perfectly sane people will be snuggled in their warm houses > whining about the miserable weather outside, and the general failings of > the 2016 “winter”, we the fearless Putney BKL will be boldly staging a wild > and crazy skimeister practice at Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro!. > > > Bring skate or waxless skis. just one pair of skis will do fine! BKL Wed, Feb 24–SkiMeister at Memorial Park!

Dear Skiers, While most perfectly sane people will be snuggled in their warm houses whining about the miserable weather outside, and the general failings of the 2016 “winter”, we the fearless Putney BKL will be boldly staging a wild and crazy skimeister practice at Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro!. Bring skate or waxless skis. just one pair of skis will do fine! Dress for a lovely wintry mix in the high 30s! There is currently a decent cover of man made “snow” of sorts, and we hope it will soften a bit by Wed afternoon and be further tempered by a touch or questionable precipitation on top. This informal event will feature, we hope, a xc ski/skate up the ski hill, followed by a giant slalom down, and then a separate jumping event scores on style and distance. And we will definitely have a beginner and advance level courses. ..and of course everyone will get cookies ,…otherwise, we have yet to plan the details! Feel free to bring a sled along! All ages are welcome–and only a few brain cells required–so if your kids don’t want to come, well just leave them at home alone …or in the car! Meet at 3:40 –Park at the ice skating rink parking lot above the lower parking lot. Start by 3:50. Please car pool if possible. Pick up at the park at about 5:10. Hope to see you there! Thanks Hans 802 380 2109

Wed BKL Feb 17–Confirmed Putney School skiing!

Dear Skiers, There will be white stuff on the ground tomorrow afternoon, so lets go with the below plan as it is. We will need to decided what to do when we see the conditions and the impact of grooming on open field crust (or frozen slushy)….and who shows up. It is possible it could be ok, actually!! So please come with skate or waxless skis and an open mind and we will see what trouble we can get into! 3:30–Putney School 5 pm pick up Thanks, Hans 802 380 2109 On Mon, Feb 15, 2016 at 7:05 PM, Hans Estrin <hansestrin@gmail.com> wrote: > Dear Skiers, > > This is now my comic refrain (but at least I can cut and paste !): > > Lets see what the weather does and make the final call about Practice on > Tuesday night!! > > ….but…. > > our current plan….. if we have a NET accumulation of frozen matter….. > is to > *SKI at the Putney School! …and we may have a special guest (Nordic > royalty in fact)….so stay tuned!* > This will be SKATING or waxless skiing. Wed BKL, Feb 10–Putney School…To ski or not to ski?

Dear skiers, This is my now standard 2016 Monday night email to say: Lets see what the weather does and make the final call about Practice on Tuesday night!! ….but…. my current plan, if we get a few precious inches of snow, as predicted is to actually *SKI at the Putney School!* This will be waxless or classic skiing (If possible, do NOT use fancy race skis). We will have kick wax, if needed. We will play games, ski robustly and joyfully, and eat cookies…of course… and need i say that jumping is highly probable. If the predicted snow fails us, well, will we cry and snivel? Will we sulk and brood? WIll we cower and crumple? … No way!! We will STAND and come with sensible SHOES, and smiles, singing like the Trapp family, to play games and explore the icy woods while packing cookies into our chipmunk cheeks! SO…for now, plan on getting to the Putney School Main driveway by 3:30–official start by 3:45pm. End by 5 pm. Stay tuned till tomorrow night about the final activity plan… *to ski or not to ski!* Hans

Putney BKL for Feb 3–BLACK Mountain ADVENTURE!

Dear skiers, We do not shrivel in the face of adversity. We do not whine or complain, cower or snivel. We let not anger consume us. We let not the subjunctive tense corrupt our tongues! No! When the snowing gets melted, the tough get going…for a *BLACK MOUNTAIN Adventure!* *SO, Here is the plan* for this balmy and perhaps a wee bit wet Wednesday afternoon: – Throw your skis with superlative force into the garage, the closet, or any place where they cannot be seen. – No one is to mention the subject or verb “Ski” or “Skiing” for the entire afternoon or you will be banished from the club. – *Drive 15 minutes from Putney to Meet at the east-side Black Mountain pull- off by 3:40–leave by 3:50 pm. * HIKING with shoes or hiking boots and other sensible clothing. No Nordic accessories, if you catch my drift. Please car pool to keep the global temperature down. (And parking is very limited) – We will break into two or three groups and meet on the south summit of black mountain at 4:40-5 pm for cookies and first aid. – *RETURN TIME–* Down by 5:15pm, back to Putney by 5:30-5:45 pm. – *The EASY group* will walk the trail 1/2 mile to the summit, and play mongo hide-and-seek until the others arrive. – The *EXTREME CHALLENGEE group* will slip over the west side, traverse south-east and then scale the steep shrapnel of wet granite slab, covered with slimy lichen and rattle snakes to the summit. (that last part was a joke). But did I mention this is bush-wacking?… There ain’t no trail where we are going… Only ticks just waking to the warm air and rustle of warm-blooded mammals. And if we are lucky it will also be icy, but don;t get your hopes up, given the predicted previous day of rain and 50 F. Ahh.. Februrary in VT! – The *middle group,* if there be one, will do something in the middle. thus its name. Come one, come all! Email or call me with questions as needed. Thanks Hans 802 380 2109
